Principles of pharmacodynamics:- 

How do drugs perform their action? Basically, drugs do not impart new functions to any system but they only change the ongoing activities of the systems or organs and tissues. Drug perform their actions differently but basic drug action can be classified as ; 


Stimulation:- 

Some drug act as a stimulant to enhance the level of activities of a particular organ e.g; adrenaline stimulates the heart, and pilocarpine stimulates the salivary gland. But excessive stimulation can cause depression in that particular function.


Depression:- 

It refers to stopping or decreasing the activities of specialized cells. E.g ; Barbiturates depress CNS , omeprazole depress gastric acid secretion. You will be wounder to know that certain drugs depressed one type of cell or receptor but the same drug can stimulate another receptor. 

E.g; acetylcholine stimulates intestinal smooth muscle but at the same time depresses the SA node of the heart.

  


Factors affecting drug‘s pharmacodynamics:- 

Certain factors can affect a drug’s pharmacodynamics response.

i ) Disease or disorder

ii ) Age 

iii ) other drugs

There is various disease like diabetes mellitus, genetic mutation Parkinson's disease, etc. These disorders can change receptor binding sensitivity and also alter the level of binding proteins.

Drug-Drug interaction affects the drug’s pharmacodynamics:-

iii ) Drug-Drug interaction is also involved in altering the drug’s pharmacodynamic responses. There are many drugs when take when taken together they inhabit or decrease the Therapeutic action of each other.

Some drugs increase the elimination of other drugs.
